Flat Water

Environmental

Flat Water is a large scale wood and audio installation located in the Massengale Residential Complex on UNL's East Campus. Depicting 16 square miles of farmland located along the Platte River, this aerial view of central Nebraska illustrates the balance between manufactured and natural formations, reflecting the campus’ agricultural programs and research philosophy. Abstracted geometric lines trace paths of highways and irrigation patterns around the cut void of the river basin. Speakers embedded behind the panels stream real-time audio from the Platte Basin Timelapse Project—a research project that documents the ecology of the basin—creating a subtle white noise corresponding to the time of day, year, and season of the site.

Flat Water is a unique combination of data, fabrication, and art to provide students with an important link back to their roots, and a reminder of where their education might take them.
